Obituary of Frances Jean Smith

Frances Jean (Enos) Smith February 7, 1925 – December 20, 2016 Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Frances Jean Enos, better-known as “Jean,” moved with her parents to Elsinore, California in 1935 where her father, had a home-building business. The family later moved to West Los Angeles where Jean attended University High School in Santa Monica, graduating in 1943. As faithful a member of Faith Tabernacle Church, Jean was part of a group of young people who attended church every Sunday, and formed life-long friendships. While many of the young men in the church were called into the service at the start of WWII, Jean and her girlfriends worked in local businesses supporting the War effort. Upon the return of those service men, Jean married Everett Allen Smith on July 7, 1945, one of the boys from the church, and neighbor who lived just down the street. Jean and Everett moved to the San Fernando Valley in 1950, after the birth of their two daughters, where they bought their first home on the G.I. Bill, and where they lived for more than 20 years. After their daughters left home, Jean and Everett moved to Oklahoma for a number of years, but eventually returned to California, settling in Palmdale. Jean was a faithful Christian and, while working as a secretary, continued to volunteer at her church in roles such as treasurer, secretary, Sunday school teacher, pianist, and her beautiful soprano voice could be heard among others in the church choir. After the passing of her husband, Jean moved to Simi Valley, California where she lived in a beautiful assisted living community, keeping busy with activities, making new friends, and enjoying her golden years. She was known and loved by so many, who enjoyed her sweet spirit, and her friendly attitude. She was blessed to see the birth of her first great-grandchild. Jean is survived by her daughter Carolyn Smith Szafran, who lovingly cared for and meticulously managed her life for the last 10 years, and her husband, Alan Michael Szafran, their children Lindsay Marie Szafran, Brian Alan Szafran and his wife Melissa Sears Szafran, her great-granddaughter, Corbin Gwendolyn Szafran; her daughter Barbara Smith O’Connell and husband, Francis Joseph “Frank” O’Connell, their children Kimberly O’Connell Davis and her children, Logan O’Connell Davis and Kacey Elizabeth McClellan; Sean Colter O’Connell and his fiancé Elizabeth Ann Kosta; Thomas Mackenzie “Mack” O’Connell and his wife Caroline King O’Connell; her step-granddaughter Morgan McCrady, and her step-great-grandson, Brantley Chappell. Jean’s surviving siblings are Robert Enos, Mary Enos Weil, John Enos and Jim Enos, and many, many nieces and nephews. She is pre-deceased by her husband, Everett Allen Smith, her sister Marjorie Enos Cowherd, her step-grand-daughter Lauren Beth O’Connell, and parents Irvin William “Bill” and Margaret Swarthout Enos. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at the Rose Family Mortuary in Simi Valley, California, followed by lunch at 11 a.m. at the Courtyard by Marriott, 191 Cochran Street, Simi Valley.
