Obituary of Edith Mable Cusworth

Please share a memory of Edith to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Edith Mabel Pobanz was born with much excitement on New Years’ Eve, December 31, 1934, the third of three children, to Arthur Max Pobanz and Martha Rudolph Pobanz, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Her mother Martha died when Edie was three, leaving Arthur to care for three young children, Norman, LuAnn and Edie. He then married Martha’s best friend, Elly Bley, who lived down the street, with whom he then had two more children, Beverly and Nancy. Arthur, Martha and Elly all immigrated from Germany to Salt Lake City and were great friends. The Pobanz family spent World War II worrying about their family members left behind in Germany. Edie was raised with a love for her German ancestors and watched her parents attending the Salt Lake Temple doing salvation work for their German ancestors who had passed on. Edie moved from Salt Lake City to Los Angeles in 1956 where she rented a room from Archie and Elva Cusworth, not knowing that she and their youngest son Edward would fall in love over their daily Cusworth family meals at the dining table. She and Ed were married in the Los Angeles Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, for time and all eternity on April 26, 1958. Three children came to their union and made life interesting: Debbie Watson (Brett), Jeff (Karina) and Jim (Debi). She devoted herself to raising her family while they moved to different parts of the greater Los Angeles area, finally settling in Thousand Oaks, California in 1968 where she remained for next 40 years. Edie held many callings for her church and found great joy serving as Ward organist, Ward chorister, Primary and Sunday School teachers, and Young Women president. She was a dedicated visiting teacher all her life, sharing her gift for listening to and helping others in their time of need. Another calling she accepted was her supportive role as Ed served as counselor and then Bishop of the Thousand Oaks 3rd Ward. One of her most rewarding periods of service over the last few years, while living in California, was working every month in the Los Angeles Temple with long time friends. Her children and grandchildren loved and adored her as she spent countless hours traveling around several states to see them over the past 15 years. Edith is preceded in death by her eternal companion Ed, mother Martha, mother Elly, father Arthur, sister LuAnn, and sister Beverly. She is survived by brother Norman (Carma), sister Nancy (Ed); sister in law Dee (Bob); her children Debbie (Brett), Jeff (Karina), Jim (Debi) and her 10 grandchildren: Jerrid (Jaydyn), Courtney, Jordan (Ryan), Jacob (Jessica), Cameron, Kendra (Sam), Jamison, Kira, Kyle, and Andrew along with numerous nieces and nephews. The Cusworth family would like to thank Dr. Slomowitz and staff; Los Robles Hospital, Intensive Care Unit and Oncology floor; and Rose Family Funeral Home for their caring, thoughtful and personal attention during this special time on befall of our beloved mother.
