Obituary of Thelma Edward Carey
Please share a memory of Thelma to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Thelma (Teddy) Edward Carey, 93, passed away May 12, 2016 peacefully at her home in Sherman Oaks, California. She was loved by her family and friends for her gentle nature, kindness, thoughtfulness, generosity and sense of humor. She developed many close friends throughout her life, all of which were devoted to her to the end. Teddy attended BYU and the University of Utah before being called to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) in the Northern California Mission during World War 2. It was during this time that she became reacquainted with Kenneth S. Carey, a former classmate at South High in Salt Lake City, now a newly-returned soldier from the war. They were married on March 25, 1948. They both attended Stanford University, Teddy on a scholarship, and settled in the Menlo Park/Portola Valley area to raise a family. Together they had three children: Douglas Edward, Kathleen and Robert Alan. They also took in an Indian boy, Roland Miller, through the Church’s Indian Placement Program and raised him for 6 years. The Careys lived in Ladera for nearly 50 years and were active in their church and community. Teddy volunteered with the Veterans Administration for 50 years, putting in 8,000 hours. She served on the Board of Directors for the Peninsula Concert Association, which brought world-renowned concert artists to the Bay Area to perform and she served in various positions in the Church, including Relief Society President. Teddy also loved traveling, golf and the arts. She volunteered with TheatreWorks in Palo Alto and, when she moved to Los Angeles to live with her daughter in 2000 she started acting in earnest, appearing in several web series and TV shows. She also loved doing genealogy and was an active member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. Teddy is survived by her son Douglas (Doug) and his wife Whistle (Elizabeth), their four children, Bill (& Leonor and their daughter Remedy), Jennifer, Sarah and Paul; her daughter Kathleen (Kathi) and her husband David (Dave) Manship; and her son Robert (Bob) and her sister Merlyn Whitaker. She will be deeply missed by friends and family. Funeral services will be held at the Sherman Oaks Ward Building of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 14001 Burbank Boulevard, Sherman Oaks, California 91401 on Thursday, May 19, 2016, a viewing at 10:00 am, services to begin at 11:00am. Internment and graveside services to be held on Friday, May 20, 2016, at Skylawn Memorial Park, 100 LifeMark Road (Highway 92 at Route 35), San Mateo, California
