Obituary of Janice Sue Overton

Please share a memory of Janice to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Janice Sue Overton went to be with The Lord Jesus on Friday, June 16, 2017.  She passed peacefully with her family at her bed side at Los Robles Hospital ICU.

Jan was born in Sabetha, Kansas on July 25, 1940. Her older brother Jack Hanks preceded her in death. Her father, Dwight Hanks was a district manager for Mobil Oil Company. Jan graduated from Shawnee Mission High School in Kansas City, Kansas. She was a Home Economics Major at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. Jan was working in Kansas City when she met Hank Overton in 1961. They were married on August 11, 1962 after Hank’s graduation from the University of Kansas. They moved to Denver, Colorado where Hank worked as a Systems Engineer for IBM.

In 1966, they became a Continental Airline family when Hank used his Navy flying experience to obtain a job as a pilot. Jan became the mother of three sons in rapid succession.  Frank in June 1963, then Jim in November 1964 and Bill December 1967. As the family grew Hank took a job as a check airman and manager, which brought the family to LAX and Westlake Village in 1977. All three of Jan’s boys graduated from Agoura High School and attended California Universities.

As the boys graduated from High School Jan’s interest and career as an interior designer took off. She and her next-door neighbor, Donna Landry graduated from UCLA School of Interior Design.  They worked together on many projects. Jan always had a project going with the eighteen-different homes she and Hank owned, most of which they lived in.

Jan was very proud of the beautiful brides each of her boys have chosen. Frank & Naomi met while attending Stanford and married upon graduation. They now live in Larkspur Colo., near Colo. Springs, where Frank works in the field of renewable energy. Naomi recently completed her doctorate at Fuller Theological Seminary and works as the National Director of World Vision’s National Leadership Council. They have three children; Tyler is graduating with a Masters from Oxford this Spring, Delaney is a Junior at Stanford, and Katriel is a freshman at Westmont College in Santa Barbara. Jim and Ruth met while attending Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo where they now live. They have three children; Ben will be a freshman at the University of California at Merced this fall, Greg is a senior in high school, and Lezza is a bright and shining star in 6th grade. She brings great joy to all who know her. Jim and Ruth have spent the past twenty-five years as missionaries mainly in the former Soviet Union. Jim still makes extensive trips to Russia and the Ukraine. Bill and Kristin met after college and were married in Kristin’s home town of Palo Alto. They now live in Boise with their three children. Bill is the full time director of the Young Life ministry at Boise State Univ. Kristin is a family counselor and administrator at Cole Valley Christian High School, where their oldest daughter Kate graduated in May. She is taking a gap year and will be serving as an urban missionary in San Francisco, before starting at Westmont College (her mom’s alma mater). Ian is a sports guy in high school and has a gift of focus and achievement and Sam is in grade school where he is an over achiever in both school and sports.

This is the story of Jan’s pride and joy - her family. She enjoyed returning to Southern California be near the church families and friends where her sons grew up and the PEO women’s association.  The Memorial Celebration Service is being held at Calvary Community Church on Saturday, July 8, at 11:00am, with a reception to follow.

It has always been Jan’s wish that all would have a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Samaritan’s Purse Ministry of Franklin Graham.
