Obituary of Spencer J. Smith

Spencer J. Smith formerly of Knollhaven St in Simi Valley passed away late Sunday night, January 22nd, 2017 after a lengthy battle with a terminal illness. He was born in Orange, CA to Spencer S. Smith and Lucille Allen on August 17th, 1934. He was the firstborn of three children. Mr. Smith was raised in Garden Grove and graduated from Garden Grove High in 1952. After a stint in the United States Air Force as radio electronics technician, he volunteered to serve as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Argentina. Upon his return to the United States he enrolled in Orange Coast College to study electronics technology. He met his future wife Linda Ann Mahaffey during his studies, and they were married in March of 1961. Upon graduation from Long Beach State College in 1965, with a degree in Industrial Technology, he began his lifelong career with GTE (now Verizon). Spencer and his wife Linda moved to Simi Valley in 1968 and raised their four children there. Spencer retired in 1996 and ran a handyman business known as Let Spencer Do It. Spencer's hobbies included woodworking, fixing cars, and amateur (ham) radio and television. He served as the president of the Mercury Amateur Radio Assocation for 30 years. He is survived by his wife of nearly 56 years, Linda, brothers, Rowland Smith and David Smith, his children Evan (Liz) Smith, Audrey (Steve) Parry, LaMar (Lisa) Smith, and Courtney Smith, and 11 grandchildren.
