Mom passed away on Father’s Day.
Mom was a widower.
She was my mom, our mom…and she fulfilled the role of my dad…our dad.
At times, we forgot to say thank you for all that you have done.
Mom was there to celebrate our successes.
Mom was there to comfort us in our setbacks.
Mom taught us by her examples.
The value of hard work, good judgement,
Courage and integrity
Mom passed away on Father’s Day.
Mom always wanted everyone to be treated equally and fairly…she made sure everyone was taken care of…and that everything was equally divided!
She never wanted to impose on anyone…she even brought her own toilet paper and towels when she visited. Or she would always bring over a house gift … just because she said it was the polite thing to do. She would always be concerned about others…and was always a gracious host.
Whenever we bought her groceries or household items, she would insist on paying for everything. She did not want to cause us any burden!
Mom had a passion for butterflies. She always admired the intricate patterns and colors. And that from an ugly worm…a beautiful butterfly would emerge. She loved orchids and roses. She loved watching the hummingbirds that zipped around the yard. She loved all flowers and butterflies are just self-propelled flowers.
Mom passed away on Father’s Day.
Mom enjoyed listening to John Wooden, the famous UCLA basketball coach. Coach Wooden had a favorite poem…that mom must have enjoyed:
A careful (wo)man I must be;
A little fellow follows me.
I know I dare not go astray;
For fear he’ll go the self-same way.
He thinks that I am good and fine;
Believes in every word of mine.
The base in me he must not see;
This little chap who follows me.
I must be careful as I go;
Through summer sun and winter snow.
Because I am building, for the years to be;
This little chap who follows me.
Mom passed away on Father’s Day.
In true mom fashion, she endured all of this without ever tipping us off about the stress she must have been experiencing. She shrugged off the long work days and the weeks spent in a classroom so that her kids could live in blissful oblivion. She crafted a wonderfully normal childhood for us while she single-handedly balanced all of the struggles of raising three boys.
Mom loved Huell Howser’s California Gold. She attempted to try his “food recommendations”…even though she usually had a different opinion.
She loved the Lakers. She always complained that we needed a “deadeye” to shoot the ball. She thought Kobe took too many shots and didn’t share the ball enough! Who would have thought….
Mom loved In-N-Out burgers and taking the grandkids to eat! She loved having a cheeseburger with extra sauce and extra tomatoes. She’d enjoy a chocolate milkshake if she wanted a special treat.
Mom used to talk about the TV Personalities – Yan Can Cook, Ming Tsai, Martha Stewart and Dr. Oz….and wondered why we didn’t like them as much as she did!
Mom also had room for bad Reader’s Digest Jokes – every car ride, every dinner, and times in between. My kids complain about my jokes…guess I got some of them from you mom.
We were loved, and our lives were always full..
We wonder if we ever thanked you enough!
Only God knows how much you drove each of us crazy!
And for the simple things in life,
Like laughter, smiles and times we shared?
If we have forgotten to show our gratitude for all the things you did,
We're thanking you now.
And we are hoping you knew all along,
How much you meant to us.
Mom passed away on Father’s Day
Mom loved dad very much.
She used to sign every check as Mrs Andrew Chin. She reluctantly changed as the times dictated that she does otherwise. She always had a picture of dad – in the house, in her room, an in her purse.
Mom passed away on Father’s Day. Guess she wanted to visit our dad.
We love you mom. I hope there are lots of butterflies where you are and that you’re enjoying your time with dad.

Ruth Dong was born on Dec 1,1926 at 2:45am to Tai Shee and Edwin Dong in Los Angeles, California. She was the second of their six children and their second girl. She always said that she was supposed to be a boy, so she spent a good amount of time with her father, going to the vegetable markets and making deliveries. After Ruth, two more girls were born, Lily and Martha, and finally two boys, Paul and Bomund.
Growing up, Chinese school and church were an integral part of Ruth's life. One of her fondest memories was eating a neighbor's home-made hom sui gook, and the taste and smell of freshly made fortune cookies.
Ruth was a good student. Among other things, she won 1st Place in the Americanism Essay Contest held by the American Legion Auxiliary in 1940. She attended Twentieth Street School, Lafayette Junior High, and Thomas Jefferson High School before heading to UCLA in 1944. She was one of only a handful of Chinese students, and it was there that she met her future husband, Andrew Chin, along with many other friends that have continued through the years, fondly known as “The Gang”.
Ruth worked various jobs including being a house keeper, working at Brookdale Ice Cream, Sears, and other miscellaneous jobs. After graduating from UCLA in 1948, (earning a BA in Sociology) Ruth worked as a social worker.
Ruth and Andy married on March 19, 1950. Andy worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad, and they had many wonderful adventures traveling to various spots. One of her favorites was New Orleans where she enjoyed the oysters Rockefeller.
They had two boys, Timmy and Larry, when Timmy was in a tragic car accident and died at the age of 3. Ruth and Andy went on to have 2 more boys, Ryan and Greg. When Andy started having heart problems, Ruth decided to become a teacher so that she would have the same schedule as her boys.
Andy died December 7, 1970. Ruth was left to bring up 3 boys (ages 9, 13, and 15) by herself.
Ruth threw herself into whatever endeavor she was pursuing, be it teaching (she became bilingual certified), square dancing, folk dancing, or volunteer work (she has her name engraved on a plaque and commendations from Mayor Tom Bradley for her 10+ years of volunteering for the LA Public Library).
Being a single parent was challenging, but Ruth was able to raise 3 caring and capable sons. Their wives are thankful for their cleaning and cooking abilities.
Ruth traveled to many countries to advance her teaching, including Mexico, Korea, Japan, and China. Many years ago, Mom also had some fun and wild times traveling with her younger sister, Lily, to Europe. Among other things, Ruth found herself locked inside the Louvre at closing time, and another time, she and Lily had to pay a fine after Lily pulled the emergency brake on a train.
In 1990, Ruth happily retired from Pinewood Elementary School in Tujunga to help take care of her grandson, Tim (Greg's son). She reveled in her 7 grandchildren: Andy, Tim, Ali, Spencer, Andrea, Adam, and Audrey.
Through it all, Ruth was fiercely independent. Ruth passed away peacefully in her home, June 19, 2016 due to complications from diabetes, heart failure, and cancer.
Mom, we will always be grateful to you for all the love and sacrifices that you made for all of us.
