I went back to college at age 30 when my youngest of three children started kindergarten. That was in 1970.
Dr. Gunkle waved required classes since I had many years of New York Community Theatre experience by then, and often said, fondly, I reminded him of his Hunter College students. We became friends and he made those college years meaningful and memorable. He’ll always be remembered by me with respect and admiration.

I was student in Mr. Gunkle's class at CSUN in 1977. He was very supportive, kind and encouraging to me. I was thinking of my college days today and he crossed my mind. I googled him and was saddened to hear that he had passed away. Although I didn't know him well, I think that's the point. Even though I was just one of many students who crossed paths with him over the years, his positive influence is still fondly remembered. I think that is the best legacy for which anyone could ever ask -- that he brightened and improved the lives of the people he encountered.

Dr. Gunkle was kind enough to cast me in a play when I was a freshman at CSUN. He was marvelously supportive during the production, and continued to be so, the rest of my time there. I have very fond memories of him, and am sad to hear of his passing.

George taught me many things during my theater training at CSUN, but the one thing he showed me as a living example was that a relationship with a professor wasn't necessarily over when you graduate. For many years thereafter, George gave of himself in support, time, and expertise in the many times he read a new play of mine. He was extremely kind and supportive of my work, and he helped me grow as a writer. I'm grateful to have had George in my life. Today, I am a professor of theater myself and whenever a former student asks me to read a new play, I think of George and say yes, of course. Rest in peace, George. With love and gratitude.

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there… I do not sleep.
I am the thousand winds that blow…
I am the diamond glints on snow…
I am the sunlight on ripened grain…
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you waken in the morning’s hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of gentle birds in circling flight…
I am the soft star that shines at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry—
I am not there… I did not die.

Our deepest condolences and sympathies for you during this loss.
May courage and strength be yours along with fond memories and warmth.
For you Jeff:
Grive, but not far long.
Remember, for memory is forever.
Breathe, each draw brings strength.
Smile, like Spring Sun it soothes a cold Spirit.
Hope, it is the Lifeblood of the Spirit.
Heal, for Life is about living.
Live! For in his passing he will wish the best of it for you!
