Please share a memory of Raymond to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Obituary Raymond George McDermott, age 89, of Simi Valley, California passed away peacefully at home with his family on January 1, 2015; he suffered from heart failure and cancer. Raymond George McDermott was the only child of Eaton McDermott and Doris Tyler McDermott, born on January 19, 1925. He was raised in North Hollywood, California when it was mostly orange groves and farm land. Ray would often say that "you could shoot a gun in any direction and not hit a thing." At the age of 18 he enlisted in the Army during World War II. Ray was proud of his service to our county in the United States Army, during WWII. He was an expert with guns and was trained to drive most vehicles, including an amphibious tank. He served in the South Pacific and was stationed in the Philippines. After the war Ray returned to California and met the love of his life Patricia Rose Palermo. They fell in love and married one month later, after 5 years of marriage they had a son, Raymond Tyler McDermott. Ray and Pat were happily married for 49 ½ years, until her death in 1995 after a lengthy illness. Ray was a tile setter by trade for over 40 years; he retired at the age of 62. Raymond George McDermott was a loving husband, father and grandfather; he is survived by his son Ty McDermott, daughter-in-law Terry McDermott, granddaughter Christa Rae McDermott, and grandson Patrick Tyler McDermott. Ray's favorite saying was, "the main thing is, never get excited", which means don't worry or get upset, it will all work out. There will be a funeral mass for Ray on Monday, January 12 at 11:00 am, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic church, located at 1305 Royal Avenue, Simi Valley, CA, 93065. The burial will follow at Assumption Cemetery, 1380 Fitzgerald Road, Simi Valley. Ray's WWII service was very important to him; therefore his funeral service will have a patriotic theme.
