Obituary of Donald Schmidt

Donald Schmidt, age 82, went to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, July 29, 2011. Born in Nome, Alaska to parents Albert and LulaSchmidt, Donald grew up the youngest of three children, attending school in Bethel, AK until his senior year when his family moved to Los Angeles, CA. After graduating from Culter Academy in 1946, Donald attended Prairie Bible School in Alberta, Canada. He joined the army in 1952 and remained in Alaska throughout his tour of duty. Donald worked as a missionary with the Moravian Church before becoming chief of police in Bethel. He moved to Los Angeles, CA in 1963 where he worked for Greyhound Bus Lines until his retirement in 1995. Donald attended The Church at Rocky Peak for the past 20 years. Donald's childhood in Alaska had taught him a love and respect for the outdoors. He vacationed with his family in the High Sierras every year teaching his children to hike and fish. Donald, also, had a love for the desert. His hobby of rock hounding frequently took him to the desert where he would find gemstones with which to make jewelry for his loved ones. Donald's love for the outdoors would earn him two awards in 2005; Volunteer of the Year by the Rancho Simi Valley Park District and Making a Difference awarded to him by the Rotary Club of Simi Valley. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lillie Schmidt; son, David Schmidt; two daughters Linda Twichell and Donna Harris and sister Ella Warloe. He also leaves behind grandchildren Madison and McKayla Harris, Jeff and Ginni Morse and Justin and Samantha Kuhn. He is predeceased by his sister Alleyene Schmidt. A celebration of his life will be held at 11 am, Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at Rose Family Funeral Home, 4444 Cochran Street in Simi Valley, (805) 581-3800.
