Obituary of Joe Murphy

Please share a memory of Joe to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

July 28, 1955 - September 18, 2022

Joseph Anthony Murphy, age 67, of Simi Valley, California, passed away on September 18, 2022 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Joe was born in San Fernando, California, to Rick and Kay Murphy on July 28, 1955. He was the only son amongst 7 daughters. This made Joe a very special brother. He graduated from Royal High School in Simi, California in 1973. He worked for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power for 31 years, the last 24 years as a heavy equipment mechanic, and retired in August 2010. He then worked at Wildwood Recovery where he remained good friends with so many of his co- workers.

In 1990, Joe married Cecilia, and became stepfather to Shawn. Together, Joe and Cecilia loved to travel. Whether it was driving across the country to visit National Parks, riding by train through Europe, or just setting up camp along the California coast, they were always making plans for their next trip.

At home, Joe loved and thrived making pottery. With a kiln and potter's wheel in his garage, Joe developed a skill and passion for pottery. He entered his works into the Ventura County Fair competition for many years and brought home several ribbons each time. Each piece created was a challenge and joy, as life is.

Joe is survived by his wife of 32 years, Cecilia, and son, Shawn Iwaoka, of Simi Valley. He is also survived by his sisters, Sue Sale (Bob) of Roseville, Peggy Podratz (Curt, deceased) of Simi Valley, Judy Coppedge (Darrell) of Las Vegas, Ellen Hosack (Jeff) of Castaic, Donna Murphy of Las Vegas, and best friend Rick Eker, along with 22 nieces and nephews, who loved their Uncle Joe. He is preceded in death by his parents, Rick and Kay Murphy, sister Nancy Smith (Danny, living), and Linda Fessenden (Greg, deceased).

His family and friends will always remember him as a very humble, kind-hearted, caring and hilarious man with the best sense of humor and a never-ending variety of funny faces that kept everyone laughing.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the Adventist Hospital nurses and staff.

Memorial services will be held at Rose Family Funeral Home at 4444 Cochran St., Simi Valley, on Saturday, October 1st at 11:00 am.
